Website Adoption Form The process of finding and owning a website is somewhat similar to owning a pet. Websites, like pets, come in various shapes, sizes and breeds. Each one has its’ own set of needs and specific care level. Over the years, I have found that it is sometimes hard for those of us who don’t design websites for a living to specify exactly what we want for our website. That is where this document comes in. This is not a questionnaire, nor is it a survey. Think of this as a pet adoption pre-qualification form and thought provoker. When I think about the perfect website for my business/agency/project, it most resembles (select one): * A Dog. This website takes some initial effort to train it to do what you want. In terms of maintenance, this website requires regular, consistent maintenance. A Cat. This website takes less effort to train, partially because cats can’t be trained to do anything they don’t want to do. Leave some food out and provide a litter box and pet it once in a while. A Fish. Clean water and some food every once in a while. This website can’t be trained to do a whole lot, but who expects fish to do tricks anyway? A Horse. This website looks good and runs like the wind, but costs the most to acquire and maintain in terms of time and effort. A Pet Rock. Not really invested in training or maintenance? All a rock needs is some paper to rest on and it is fine. On a good note, takes very little training to “stay”. A New Species. If you can apply terms like cutting-edge, unconventional, non-standard to your perfect website, then select this one. When I think about what time I can realistically commit to maintaining my website, I measure it in the following interval (select one): * Several times a day. You are fully dedicated to giving the website near-constant attention. Whether it is because you are online 23.5 hours of the day, or your business will be in some part done through the website, you are there. Fits dogs, horses and the non-standard websites. Once or twice a week. Perhaps your business requires you to be outside a lot. Perhaps your website just simply won’t need constant attention. Cats and fish work well with this timeframe. Once or twice a month. You are not looking to provide a lot of new content on your website, or simply don’t have the time to play with it more than a couple of times a month? Definitely a fish website. Not really ever. Are you thinking more about an online business card than a website with changing content, or just need “something up there” because it needs to be done? Grab Rocky and let’s go. When would you like to take your website home (select one and be honest, we won’t judge you): * Today. While this isn’t realistically possible, it does provide us with insight into your website needs. Tomorrow. Probably not going to happen either. Only possible with fairly uncomplicated rocks. Next week. Now we are approaching realistic expectations. Still a bit on the “rushed” side, but in some instances possible. A month or two. Most websites can be delivered in this timeframe and look good when they get home. Sometime this year. You don’t really have a timeline for the website, or are a very “it will happen when it happens “ type of person. When thinking about the perfect color and breed for your website, there are a few key areas to consider. Please rate them on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being very important and 1 being not important .
